For years, the creatures that swim, slither, and skitter their way through the deepest waters on Earth have evaded even the most determined research scientists. That’s because studying the depths of the ocean is nearly impossible. The traditional technology we use to explore the ocean—boats, trawl nets, underwater cameras, submersible robots—cannot typically extend to the deepest parts of the sea floor.
